Kevin Costner's departure forced major rewrites, and John Dutton's death is handled abruptly and unsatisfyingly early in the final episodes. The rushed conclusion feels more like clearing the board for spinoffs than a earned payoff for the Dutton family saga. The journey is worth it, but the destination undercuts much of what came before.

The series delivers gripping family drama, stunning Montana scenery, and strong performances for most of its run, making it genuinely entertaining. However, the final stretch is widely regarded as rushed, and the ending doesn't fully pay off the years of buildup. It's a case of a great ride with a bumpy landing.
