Dexter survives, abandons his old life, and ends up living in isolation as a lumberjack. The finale resolves the immediate story but offers a bleak, unsatisfying payoff.

The series reaches an ending, but its final stretch and payoff are widely considered disappointing compared with its strongest seasons.
