After nine seasons building toward Ted meeting the Mother, the finale reveals she died of illness years earlier, framing the entire story as Ted asking his kids' permission to pursue Robin. Many viewers felt this retroactively undermined the show's central premise, turning the long-awaited payoff into a bait-and-switch.

Nine seasons of sharp comedy, strong chemistry, and creative storytelling make this largely enjoyable, but the finale proved highly divisive among fans. The journey is fun, yet the ending doesn't fully reward the investment the premise promises.
